At A1 Automotive & Marine, we focus on the process as well as the end result. Our trusted and experienced team start out by listening to what you want to achieve and advise you how best to go about it. This would normally include a run on the dyno to get a baseline and see where you’re at (if the motor’s running and in the car).

Then – backed by years of experience (and results) building some of the toughest engines for street and competition around – we spec the parts you’ll need, gather them up from the best brands and most reputable suppliers, precision machine and assemble everything, and tune it all up to the final, smile-widening result.

Our in-house facilities include a precision engine assembly room, surface machining and a Dynapack™ chassis dynamometer. We sublet precision machine work, balancing, specialist headwork and engine dyno work to partners whose reputation matches ours.

At A1 Automotive & Marine, we love a big-cube V8 but we’ve also built many strong-running 6’s and turned the heat up a few notches on quite a few hot 4’s.

Dyno tuning

A chassis dyno (dynamometer, if you’re being technical) measures power and torque at the rear wheels, where the rubber hits the road. It also calculates power at the flywheel, but more importantly you learn how much of that is getting to the road, which is the best info to really fine-tune your package.

We use a Dynapack 3000 (that we’ve upgraded via software installations), which has the capacity to handle almost 3,000 ft/lb of torque and over 1,300 HP (4,000 Nm and 1,000 kW in the new money) if you can afford to make it and unlike a rolling road installation, it’s modular so we can wheel the dyno to the car and not the other way around. That keeps the cost low so you can spend less on working out what to do and more on actually doing it.

To achieve the A1 Automotive & Marine difference, we generally start on the Dynapack. We’ll hook your car up and do 3 pulls at full noise (each pull after that is charged per run) to get the numbers. Then we’ll give you a report on the results (including horsepower and torque, at the flywheel and wheels for comparison, along with peak RPM and several other important metrics). We’ll then give you our advice and recommendations on how to get to your goal.

Performance engine builds

Crafting high performance engines is where Wayne started out and is now a master.

Wayne’s engines sit out front of some of the finest street machines, custom cars, hot rods, ski-race, speed and social ski boats around.

There isn’t much Wayne doesn’t know (that’s worth knowing) about Chevy’s small block V8 and the precision craftsmanship through which he’s squeezed more and more power out of these engines is recognised no better than with the open 6-litre class record (ski-race boat) he still holds from an engine he developed analysing, testing and re-testing numbers that’d make a banker go nuts.

Small block Chevy V8’s aren’t the only engines that’ve felt his brand of touch; he’s also squeezed the guts out of many a Chevy Rat engine (stock iron and aluminium, thank you very much), Fords (from Y block 289’s through to mountain-motor 452’s), Chryslers (a legendary 426 amongst them), Holdens, even Pontiac as well as an array of 6’s and 4’s.

At A1 Automotive & Marine, we only use brands we’d be happy to use on our own engines, supplied by reputable, long-standing companies both in Australia and overseas, with machine and head-work by selected shops (again, if Wayne wouldn’t be happy using them for himself then he won’t use them for you).
